## What Is Apple MFi?

Apple's MFi program stands for "Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad". It is a feature set given to select device and peripheral makers so the devices made by those manufacturers work reliably with Apple products. For example, some joysticks and gamepads are considered MFi.

## Why Is There A Toggle For Apple MFi In Zephyr?

With the release of macOS Golden Gate, Apple began the process of removing their older OS code that referenced x86 instruction sets. These instruction sets allowed macOS to run on Intel based hardware. By removing those instructions, Apple has made it so certain devices, like XInput-based drivers, will work inconsistently on macOS moving forward.

This change by Apple necessitates us to provide support for controllers in two ways:

- Through the MFi API
- Through a more explicit non-MFi mode

The toggle has been added to Zephyr because Apple is now auto-routing controllers that are not MFi compatible into MFi mode. The toggle allows users to set the Zephyr controller detection mode manually, allowing MFi and non-MFi gamepads and controllers to access their appropriate mode.

## When Should I Toggle Apple MFi?

If the following are true, your next step should be toggling Apple MFi ON/OFF (depending on the current setting):

- Your controller is not recognized by the simulator
- You are using an [officially supported controller](https://wiki.zephyr-sim.com/supported-controllers)
- You've confirmed you controller is powered on, properly connected, and there are no other peripherals connected to your system (besides keyboard and mouse)

## How Does Toggling Apple MFi In Zephyr Work?

When you click on the toggle next to "Enable Apple MFi" in the Controller Calibration menu, you will be taken to the following warning message:

Clicking "Restart" will automatically close and re-open Zephyr in order to apply the MFi setting change. After the automatic restart, you can confirm the setting change in the Controller Calibration menu and then test your controller to confirm proper function.
